A phone company has created a bizarre phone case that looks like it’s made of “human skin” and, to top it off, it burns when exposed to the sun.

The phone case is the result of a partnership between the company O2 and creative technologist Marc Teyssier, who developed a 3D silicone case to imitate both the look and feel of human skin.

This unusual (and bizarre) invention was dubbed Skincase and is available in four different skin tones. The material also reacts when exposed to UV rays, changing the “skin’s” pigment as if it were burning.

To achieve this result, Teyssier used a combination of silicone and UV-reactive pigment, which he printed with a 3D printer to create the exclusive case. He then drew lines on the case to give it the appearance of a human palm.

Although it’s quite strange, there is a plausible reason why O2 produced these cases. According to Teyssier, the company’s goal was to raise awareness about skin cancer.

“By creating a tangible and visceral reaction to UV exposure, […] the Skincase not only raises awareness about sun safety but also highlights how sunscreen protection is an undeniable priority,” he explained.

“We created Skincase to demonstrate in real-time how severe the effects of sunburns can be and to promote awareness of vital sun safety among tourists,” added Christian Hindennach, commercial director of Virgin Media O2.
